There may be other breeds of dogs that can perform a given task better than a German Shepherd, but there is no breed that can perform as many tasks as well as the German Shepherd Dog. From loyal family companions, to war and peacetime heroes, their versatility and intelligence have allowed them to serve in law enforcement departments all over the country, and to be the first breed trained to guide the blind. Whether they are watching over the children in a family, comforting the ill and aged, guarding and herding the farmers flocks, searching for the lost and injured, or serving our Country, this dog can do it all. Just ask anyone who has been lucky enough to share his or her life with these wonderful dogs. A well-bred, well-trained German Shepherd is the ideal all around dog.

The German Shepherd Dog Club of Northern Ohio is comprised of German Shepherd fanciers whose interests range from conformation and obedience competition to Schutzhund & herding. Our members are as versatile as the breed we all love. We have breeders and fanciers with many years experience who are always willing and eager to share their knowledge with people new to our breed. 

The club meets on the second Tuesday of each month (except December). We offer informative and entertaining programs designed to satisfy everyone’s interest. We have an annual club picnic and fun puppy match. Two yearly AKC sanctioned shows are held in May & August. We also host agility trials in the winter and obedience and rally trials right before spring. 

The first impression of a good German Shepherd Dog is that of a strong, agile, well-muscled animal, alert and full of life. It is well balanced, with harmonious development of the forequarter and hindquarter. The dog is longer than tall, with the most desirable proportion as 10 to 8. It is deep-bodied and presents an outline of smooth curves rather than angles. A substantial looking dog, that is not spindly, giving the impression, both at rest and in motion, of muscular fitness and nimbleness without any look of clumsiness or soft living. The ideal dog is stamped with a look of quality and nobility; difficult to define, unmistakable when present. Secondary sex characteristics are strongly marked, and every animal gives a definite impression of masculinity or femininity, according to its sex. The desired height for males at the highest point of the shoulder blade is 24 to 26 inches; and for bitches, 22 to 24 inches.

The breed has a distinct personality marked by direct and fearless, but not hostile, expression, self-confidence and a certain aloofness that does not lend itself to immediate and indiscriminate friendships. The dog must be approachable, quietly standing its ground and showing confidence and willingness to meet overtures without itself making them. It is poised, but when the occasion demands, eager and alert. The German Shepherd Dog is both fit and willing to serve in its capacity as companion, watchdog, leader of the blind, herding dog, or guardian, whichever the circumstances may demand.

The qualities that make the GSD excel in so many areas of service also make it an excellent companion. Potential GSD owners should know that the breed requires exercise, proper training and are happiest being a part of the family. They thrive in homes where their intelligence and willingness to work is fully developed. They are a double coated breed, so regular grooming is necessary. A properly raised German Shepherd Dog will reward its family with unconditional affection and loyalty for many years.

JOIN THE GSDC OF NORTHERN OHIO

The GSDC of Northern Ohio members support all aspects and abilities of the German Shepherd Dog. As a member you will have the opportunity to become involved with club functions and operations such as running for a club officer position, joining or heading various committees, assisting with club functions and taking an active part in all club decisions. The requirements for membership in the GSDC of Northern Ohio are minimum age of 18 years for single or family membership, must be in good standing with the American Kennel Club and have an interest in and love of the German Shepherd Dog, as the dominant force in “SERVING AND PROTECTING MANKIND.”
